The Enterprise --  FAQ

All answers here apply to both versions 1.0 through 1.2, except as noted.

WHY AM I HERE?

Besides the metaphysical issues, you are here on this mountain because there is good reason to believe that Solustice Industries has gotten their grubby hands on your new mechanical eye.

WHY IS IT SO DARK?

Version 1.2 now has more light underwater, so if you are playing Version 1.1, you can download Version 1.2 and just replace it in Darkloader -- Darkloader doesn't know the difference, so you can even keep playing with the same "save" files.

Some places are still dark, especially those places not under water, so the rest of what I say hear is still true.

The way to brighten up your Thief in-game screen gamma (works with most graphics cards) is to type the "+" key. If it gets too bright, then lower the gamma with the "-" key.

If you have a graphics card that does not respond to the "+" or "-" commands when playing Thief 1, you may have a hell of a time getting through someplaces (and not just my mission). See Stuck in the Dark? -- a new mini-FAQ for those with graphics not bright enough to see in this FM (and probably others) -- then email me if you're still lost (frobber@edanet.com).

WHY ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE DEAD?

If you read the note in Captain Faustice's office, somebody has it in for him. Apparently, food is a rather hot commodity these days, and Captain Faustice's solution to food thievery was to poison the thieves -- nice guy. I'd say with an attitude like this, he is likely to have made a few enemies along the way -- ones angry enough perhaps to even distribute Faustice's poison fruit -- making him look really bad.

HOW DO I GET OUT OF THE SWIMMING POOL AREA?

The easiest way is to open the sliding roof using a switch which is one of the three below a scroll you can see posted on the swimming area wall -- then rope arrow out. A trap door in roof farther to the West lets you drop into the building past a whole bunch of security. Otherwise you can fight your way down the second-story catwalk, which is pretty easy on "EASY" but progressively harder on higher difficulties.

WHAT IS THIS THING ABOUT THE MASTER'S KEY?

Hopefully after enough scrolls and hints, Garrett gets the idea that he's not going to get his eye back until he can find Master Solustice -- who apparently has taken personal possession of the eye. The Master's key must eventually lead to the master himself.

WHERE IS THE MASTER'S KEY?

That would be telling (you can read the walkthrough if you really have to know). But as the note in Faustice's office makes pretty clear, the same guy who has been "Johnny poison fruit" has also stolen the key -- so where ever this guy is hiding is where you will find the Master's key. But I can say that you'll need to get into the auditorium before you will find him -- unless you discover a cool shortcut.

HOW DO I JUMP FROM LADDER TO LADDER IN THE CAVES?

In version 1.0 it's a bit tough -- basically you need to aim for the FAR rung on the upper ladder. Otherwise Garrett bounces off the wall before hooking on. In version 1.1 (and ver 1.2) there's a new rope hanging down so that this jump is no longer required.

HOW DO I GET INSIDE THE AUDITORIUM?

In version 1.1 there is an added clue which says to seek out Yolandis for access (the chief alchemist of the Iron Maiden division). If you stumble across the offices of either one of the other chief alchemists, you will find a key to Yolandis' safe -- including a reason for why he's handing it out. The key Garrett needs to the auditorium is inside Yolandis' safe. His office is in the back corner of the Iron Maiden division office area (look for a drafting board room).

HOW DO I MOVE ON FROM THE AUDITORIUM?

The easiest way is a rope arrow up into the opening in the auditorium ceiling. You can see this area easily if the lights are on (switches in the control room). There is one other way if you are willing to move a bunch of stuff backstage.

I GOT BLOWN TO BITS IN SOME TUNNEL - HELP!!

There is note from the key thief to a friend saying how to avoid the mines (more loot stolen from Faustice). When walking into the tunnels from under the auditorium, stay left all the way, and don't get too close to the cliff openings. There are fewer mines on easier difficulties. (This advice is backwards for those sneaking in over the wooden lookout by a freight elevator).

DO I  REALLY HAVE TO GO DOWN INTO THAT BIG LIFT SHAFT?

Yup. Also, don't forget to check underwater beneath where the dead guy is half-submerged. You also have to climb up the other lift which is under repair -- but you won't have to come back this way unless you want to.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THE MASTER'S KEY?

Go back to the executive office area where you first came in, and open the treasurer's safe. Then open the lockbox in Solustice's office. This key opens every locked door in the place, so getting back should be pretty easy.

I JUST READ A SCROLL THAT IMPLIES THAT I NOW HAVE THE EYE -- BUT I DON'T HAVE IT YET!

In version 1.0, the eye sits on a bed next to this scroll and it is possible to miss it. In version 1.1, the eye is inside a jewelry box at the foot of the bed, and this is much harder to miss.

WHO IS ALISHA ANYWAY?

Apparently, her loyalities may not have been entirely pure with respect to Garrett -- given how Solustice refers to her as "our" Alisha (that's not a typo) -- but exactly where she stood with Garrett and how much her reason for being with him was as a spy, we'll never know (until the next installment of th4e story).
