This morning Sue and I went to church at St. Paul's - first to the breakfast in the fellowship hall and then into the service. This was the first time back for Sue since the funeral - and it was good for both of us to see her walk up the steps, instead of being wheeled on a gurney.
Inside it was also good to see Sue experience the sort of public consolation expressed to me at the wake and at the funeral as she was welcomed back with words and hugs and tears.
This morning we saw and felt first hand the deep sense of community we have read about on-line and in the sympathy and get-well cards. This place is a haven and home for us.
Pam Rogers told us how much she always enjoyed Jenny's help in her pre-school Sunday School class. Jenny would sit with the kids -"her kids"- and draw and play right along with them like a big sister.
She also told us how, on the morning of the accident, a little boy in the class had crawled away under some staging in the play area - and Jenny was sent in after him. But rather than drag him out, she just sat on the fringes quietly inviting him to come out - Chris says that she learned that technique from dealing with him.
After a minute, the boy crawled out, put his head on Jenny's lap and she stroked the hair of his tiny head. The little kids -her kids- really liked her a lot.
This morning the pre-schoolers came into the service where Sue and I were sitting and handed to us what they called "warm fuzzies" - tiny colored -indeed fuzzy- little balls.
Her kids will miss Jenny. And so will we.
